The wave function of a Brownian particle

Using the Caldirola-Kanai Hamiltonian, we study the time evolution of the wave function of a particle whose classical motion is governed by the Langevin equation mẍ + ηẋ = F (t). We show, in particular, that if the initial wave function is Gaussian, then (i) it remains Gaussian for all times, (ii) its width grows, approaching a finite value when t → ∞, but (iii) its center describes a Brownian ...

Wave function of a Brownian particle

Using the Hamiltonian of Caldirola [Nuovo Cimento 18, 393 (1941)] and Kanai [Prog. Theor. Phys. 3, 440 (1948)], we study the time evolution of the wave function of a particle whose classical motion is governed by the Langevin equation mẍ + ηẋ = F (t). We show in particular that if the initial wave function is Gaussian, then (i) it remains Gaussian for all times, (ii) its width grows, approachin...

The Most Probable Database Problem

This paper proposes a novel inference task for probabilistic databases: the most probable database (MPD) problem. The MPD is the most probable deterministic database where a given query or constraint is true. We highlight two distinctive applications, in database repair of key and dependency constraints, and in finding most probable explanations in statistical relational learning. The MPD probl...

Realistic Experiments for Measuring the Wave Function of a Single Particle

We suggest scattering experiments which implement the concept of “protective measurements” allowing the measurement of the complete wave function even when only one quantum system (rather than an ensemble) is available. Such scattering experiments require massive, slow, projectiles with kinetic energies lower than the first excitation of the system in question. The results of such experiments c...

In- and outbound spreading of a free-particle s-wave.

We show that a free quantum particle in two dimensions with zero angular momentum (s wave) in the form of a ring-shaped wave packet feels an attraction towards the center of the ring, leading first to a contraction followed by an expansion. An experiment to demonstrate this effect is also outlined.
